Eugene leads North Side's R&D in Natural Language Understanding (NLU). The company's VerbalAccess enables speech and text-based access to financial services, enabling optimal use at any time from anywhere. VerbalAccess enables transactions through speech or text, fully integrated with contextual help. Ambiguities and missing information are resolved through conversation. North Side originally developed its NLU pipeline and integrated it with 3D graphics to power its Bot Colony video game, available on Steam. Bot Colony is the first game that makes English conversation an integral part of game play. It is loosely based on Eugene's Bot Colony novel, published in December 2010. North Side is Eugene’s second entrepreneurial venture focused on the human-computer interface. Eugene founded Virtual Prototypes (now Presagis at www.presagis.com ) in 1985, where he invented VAPS, which changed the way industry designs real-time displays used in airplanes, cars, and ground stations. VAPS has become the de facto standard in aerospace for avionics display design and automated generation of validated, flight-qualified display source code. Eugene also initiated the development of flexible flight simulation and war-gaming tools. On April 21, 1999 Eugene was inducted into the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum AW&ST Laureate Hall of Fame as the 1999 Electronics Laureate, for causing a paradigm shift in display development and simulation in aerospace. Virtual Prototypes went public on TSE in July 1999, and was later acquired by CAE. Eugene is interested in the automated visualization of concepts and situations described in a text, using animated 3D and 2D graphics.
