Emily Chiu

Emily Chiu is the Chief Operating Officer of TBD, the developer business at Block, Inc. (NYSE: SQ), where she oversees strategy, business development, operations, product management, brand and marketing teams. Emily co-founded this business to build a decentralized future that returns ownership and control over people’s finances, data, and identity. Guided by this vision, TBD is building an open source developer platform and infrastructure that enables everyone to access and participate in the global economy. Since 2017, Emily has held executive leadership roles across Block (formerly Square). At Cash App, she led the development and launch of new products and businesses, including Cash App’s consumer lending, investing, and broker dealer operations. She also led M&A at Square. Prior to Block, Emily was an entrepreneur and operator who built venture-backed startups in the education technology space and launched accredited universities, recognized as “breakthrough models in college completion” by EDUCAUSE and The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. She started her career in finance in private equity and investment banking at Goldman Sachs. Emily currently serves as an independent director on the board of Justworks, Inc. Previously, she spent over 5 years as an independent board director at Barnes & Noble Education (NYSE: BNED), and 6 years on the Board of Trustees, Executive Committee, and Board of Governors at the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL). Based in San Francisco, Emily is a graduate of The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
