Patrick Mahaffy is a recognized and experienced leader in oncology-focused biotechnology, specializing in drug development and commercialization in the US and Europe. Born in Boulder, Colorado, Mr. Mahaffy has led multiple companies in the industry, demonstrating his innovative and strategic vision. Currently based in South Florida, his career has been dedicated to serving patients and advancing science through various endeavors. He has served as CEO of Clovis Oncology, a company he co-founded in 2009. Clovis Oncology successfully developed and marketed a drug for ovarian and prostate cancer in the US and Europe and commenced early-stage clinical development of targeted radionuclide therapy, a new area of oncology drug development. Unfortunately, due to the adverse effects of COVID-19 on cancer diagnoses and FDA concerns about the broader class of drugs for ovarian cancer, the company wound down in late 2022. He has also previously led Pharmion from 2000 to 2008, which was eventually acquired by Celgene (now Bristol Myers Squibb), and Nexstar Pharmaceuticals from 1992 to 1998, which was acquired by Gilead Sciences. Both companies successfully developed and marketed novel US and European oncology drugs. His background includes a Bachelor's degree in International Affairs from Lewis and Clark College and a Master's in International Affairs from Columbia University. He started his career as an investment banker at Warburg Pincus from 1986 to 1992. Beyond his professional achievements, he is also known for his philanthropic contributions. He has been a committed supporter of charitable causes, mainly family assistance funds, and is a long-standing member of the Board of Trustees for Lewis & Clark College. A strategic vision, a collaborative approach, a relentless pursuit of knowledge, and vast drug development experience mark his leadership approach. Throughout his career, he has been instrumental in establishing commercial organizations in both the US and Europe, and the drugs commercialized under his leadership remain the standard of care for their respective conditions. In addition to his professional pursuits, he is an enthusiastic sports fan, enjoying activities like hiking, golf, and reading. His interests also extend to archaeology, which he developed a fascination for after discovering Clovis-age artifacts in his Colorado backyard in 2009. Despite his high-profile professional life, he prefers to maintain a private personal life with his family and friends. His accomplishments as a Biopharmaceutical Executive have been shaped by his dedication to the field of oncology, leadership in several companies, service on corporate boards, and strategic insight into commercial development and portfolio strategy. Mahaffy has led three Boulder, Colorado-based firms, each emphasizing the development and commercialization of novel oncology drugs in the US and Europe. The medications developed under his leadership remain the standard of care for their approved conditions, a testament to his lasting impact on the field.
