Moez Kassam is an entrepreneur and hedge fund manager, and the Chief Investment Officer at Anson Funds, which he co-founded in 2007. A venture capitalist and philanthropist, Kassam received the 2018 Canada’s 40 Under 40 award and became a member of the board of directors for the Canadian Olympic Committee foundation in June 2020. At Anson Funds, Moez Kassam helps manage $1.5 billion in assets. Anson Funds is an alternative asset management company with a focus on three investment strategies: classic shorts, value longs and opportunistic investments. The company has three investment funds, the Anson Investments Master Fund, or AIMF, the Arch Anson Tactical Real Estate Fund, and the Anson North Star Tactical Equity Fund . Kassam serves as the primary Portfolio Manager for the Anson Investments Master Fund, which is considered the company’s flagship fund. Back in July 2007, Kassam co-launched the Saunders Capital Master Fund LP, which was a precursor to Anson Investments Master Fund LP. Major sites like Bloomberg and Barron’s have selected Anson Funds as one of the world’s top performers. The company also placed among the Top 10 Hedge Funds chosen by Barclay Managed Funds, based on annualized returns from 2018 to 2020. Kassam also likes to stay active in his community. He’s an active member of the Young Presidents Organization’s Maple Leaf Chapter, where he serves as Education Officer. He sits on the advisory boards of the Toronto Public Library Foundation, the Immigrant Access Fund, and the Ryerson University’s Technology Innovation Circle. His personal foundation, named the Moez & Marissa Kassam Foundation, aims to strengthen the health and vibrancy of vulnerable communities. The foundation contributes to the Toronto Foundation for Student Success, Camp Oochigeas, a summer camp aimed at memorable experiences for children affected by cancer, and Doctors Without Borders. Kassam is also the lead fundraiser for the Lifeline Syria Challenge at Ryerson University. The foundation also made a generous donation to the Michael Garron Hospital, which used the funding to build the Moez & Marissa Kassam Food Court, which helps nourish a growing community of underserved patients, medical staff, and frontline workers. In fact, Kassam has a deep passion for food and cooking. When he’s not hosting dinner parties for family and friends, Kassam moonlights as the Chief Food Office of Dîner en Blanc, an international dining club. He’s also a sitting judge for Canada’s 100 Best Restaurants and the co-creator of Assembly Chef’s Hall, one of Toronto’s best-known food halls. Kassam has also donated to the University of Toronto. His generosity enabled the school to hire Abdulaziz Sachedina for Emmanuel College as a distinguished visiting professor of Islamic Studies. Kassam showed an interest in finance early in his schooling. He attended Bayview Glen School starting in 1994, and began learning how markets work after his class placed in the top three schools as part of the Toronto-Dominion Bank Stock Portfolio Challenge, which asked students to compete in a virtual stock market. Kassam holds an MBA from London Business School and a BA from Western University. He resides in Toronto, Canada.
