Olivier Avaro was born in Provence, France, on July 27, 1968 and received his master degree in telecommunication engineering in 1992 from Telecom Bretagne. He first joined France Telecom R&D department on image communication in Paris in 1992 and developed research activities on video analysis and coding. In 1998, he joined Deutsche Telekom - Berkom department on Multimedia Communication in Darmstadt, Germany, where he initiated and led several international projects from enhanced broadcasting systems with rich interactivity to multimedia teleconferencing systems and virtual environment. He joined back France Telecom R&D in 2001 as chief technical officer of the R&D department of hyper language and multimedia dialogues and founded Streamezzo in 2004, as spin-off company of France Telecom R&D. Starting 1995, he led the MPEG Systems standardization committee, a group who developed important industry standards such of the MP4 File Format as well as the MPEG-4 BIFS and LASeR standards for Rich Media services.
