The Department's annual budget was approximately $27 million. His top priority was facilitating high-quality research and ensuring adequate project funding. The faculty under his leadership spanned diverse disciplines, including biomaterials, tissue engineering, machine learning, multimodal imaging, cancer research, and fundamental physics. Under his guidance, the Department consistently ranked as one of the top 10 programs in the country for biomedical engineering. During his tenure at Rice University, he was honored with the John W. Cox Professorship, recognizing his research and leadership contributions. In addition to managing large academic departments, Deem has worked with various smaller companies in the life science sector.
