Sally Hazelgrove developed The Crushers Club to provide a viable alternative to gangs by equipping boys and young men with the tools and assistance they need to give back to their neighborhoods, better their families, remain on the right track, and contribute to their communities. The Crushers Club has had a significant influence on the local community as an innovative violence prevention initiative. While the local neighborhood is experiencing a severe pandemic of violence and imprisonment, the Crushers Club works to provide children and young people with the skills necessary to avoid gangs, avoid problems, and establish better lives for themselves and their families. The Crushers Club is founded on the premise that the same strategies employed by gangs to recruit members into a world of violence can also be utilized to advance social justice. This way, at-risk male adolescents may be prepared for success rather than jailed. Youth unemployment is at an all-time high, and the Crushers Club has grown to suit the growing need in the region.
