Hammond was born in Mineola, New York, to a dentist father and a dental hygienist mother. His father, Hortenius Hammond, attended Morehouse College and the dental school at Howard University. The senior Hammond received the highest score ever recorded on the New York State dental examination in January 2014. Hammond is a member of the fraternity Phi Beta Sigma. Kenneth Hammond attended the Waldorf School of Garden City, where he served as president of his senior class. Then, in 1973, he received a Bachelor of Arts in history from Bowdoin College and a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School. Hammond began his career in 1977 as an associate at the New York City law firm Rogers & Wells and as a consultant for Bain & Company (1979–1981). Hammond's most recent investment project is Snapinst and Hammond is an angel investor.
